Steve Jobs made a surprise, yet brief appearance at a company event in San Francisco on Wednesday to unveil the iPad 2 which will be available for sale from March 11 in the US.
Frail Jobs began his speech at the event by saying: “We’ve been working on this product for a while and I just didn’t want to miss today. Thank you for having me.”
The new successor of the former iPad will be available in black and white and will cost you somewhere around USD 499 to USD 829. Apple will start the shipment in the US on March 11 and in 26 other countries which include Spain, New Zealand and Mexico on March 25.
The new iPad 2 packs features like front and rear cameras, not to be found in its predecessor. It also encompasses a new Apple-designed chip which is capable of performing calculations at double the speed than the previous one and packs 9X augmentation in the graphics performance. The battery life is same as the original device but this device is thinner and lighter than the iPad original.
Jobs said, “The new iPad 2 is actually thinner than your iPhone 4.” Jobs did not talk about his health in the meantime. When Apple announced the first iPad, it had sold around 15 million iPads till December, 2010 encashing a little less than USD 10 billion for the company. Jobs said in this context, “We’ve never had a product that got off to that fast a start. We have 90 per cent of the market. Our competitors are just flummoxed. They went back to their drawing boards, tore up their designs.”
Jobs also added that is 2010 was known as the “Year of the iPad”, 2011, on the other hand will be known as the “Year of the copycats”, talking in context of the arrival of tablets in the market by Apple’s competitors Research In Motion, Motorola, HP, Dell and Samsung.
